My body itches all over

Itching can occur when skin is dry, inflamed or exposed to a new soap, fabric, medicine or allergen. It may happen with a rash, but some internal causes produce little or no visible skin change. A clinician may ask about liver or kidney symptoms, thyroid problems, blood conditions, recent medicines and the pattern of itching. Most people with Hodgkin lymphoma do not develop itching as an isolated clue; when it occurs, it needs the same careful assessment as other persistent symptoms. Vulvar cancer presents with symptoms in the vulval area, such as ongoing itch or a skin change, rather than unexplained whole-body itching alone.

Use lukewarm rather than hot water, apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing, and choose loose breathable clothing. Keep nails short and use a cool cloth instead of vigorous scratching. Review any newly started medicine with a pharmacist or clinician before stopping it. Arrange an appointment if itching lasts, repeatedly wakes you, leaves marks, or occurs without a clear skin trigger. Note its timing, affected areas, rash, medicines, food exposures and other symptoms.

Get urgent help for itching with facial or throat swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek prompt assessment for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, fever, drenching night sweats, marked tiredness, unexplained weight change, or a new persistent rash. A physical examination and selected tests can separate skin causes from broader conditions.
