Mustela cradle cap: what to know

Cradle cap is a common form of infant scalp scaling, often appearing as greasy or dry yellowish flakes that cling to the scalp. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is usually not uncomfortable, although some babies have redness or itch. Flakes can also appear around the eyebrows, ears, or skin folds. A product labelled for babies may help loosen scale, but a brand name does not establish a diagnosis. A clinician should assess marked inflammation, oozing, or a rash beyond typical areas.

Apply a small amount of a suitable emollient to soften scale, leave it for the time advised on the product or by a clinician, then wash gently with baby shampoo and a soft brush. Never pick, scrape, or pull attached flakes, and keep products away from the eyes and mouth. Stop a product if the skin becomes more red or irritated.
