Short answer

A muscle relaxant may ease shoulder pain linked to muscle spasm, but it does not treat every cause of shoulder pain and should be used only as directed by a clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main role
May reduce muscle spasm; it does not correct every shoulder problem.
Key precaution
Drowsiness and dizziness can affect driving and coordination.
Next step
Use only as directed and have persistent or limiting pain assessed.

The short answer

These medicines work on muscle tightness or spasm rather than repairing a tendon, joint, nerve, or bone problem. Relief can make movement easier while the underlying cause is assessed.

What this treatment can and cannot do

Shoulder pain can come from an irritated tendon, a stiff joint, a tear, arthritis, or pain referred from the neck. Rotator Cuff Tendinitis, Shoulder Impingement, and Frozen Shoulder each need a different assessment and plan. A muscle relaxant may be considered when guarding or spasm is adding to the discomfort, but it will not reverse those conditions.

Common concerns include sleepiness, dizziness, reduced alertness, and poor coordination. Alcohol, sleeping medicines, opioid pain medicines, and some other sedating drugs can increase these effects. Do not drive, cycle in traffic, or use machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.

Practical next steps

Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, breathing problems, falls, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you take. Follow the prescribed dose and schedule; do not take an extra dose because the shoulder still hurts, and do not stop a regular medicine abruptly without advice.

Keep the shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range unless a clinician has advised rest after an injury. A physiotherapist can guide exercises that protect the joint and restore movement. Arrange an assessment if pain persists, limits sleep or daily tasks, or follows a fall or sudden lifting injury. See Shoulder Pain for broader guidance.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent medical help for shoulder pain with chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the jaw or arm. Get prompt assessment after a major injury if the shoulder looks deformed, the arm cannot be moved, or the hand becomes numb, weak, cold, or unusually pale.

A fever, a hot or visibly swollen joint, or rapidly worsening pain also needs prompt review. Neck-related nerve irritation can cause shoulder and arm symptoms; Cervical Radiculopathy is one possible condition a clinician may consider when pain travels with tingling or weakness.

Questions for your doctor or pharmacist

Ask what is causing the spasm, how long the medicine is intended for, whether it is safe with your current medicines, and what level of drowsiness should prompt you to stop driving and call for advice. Also ask which gentle movements, heat or cold measures, and follow-up timing fit your diagnosis.

Questions people ask

Can a muscle relaxant cure shoulder pain?

It may reduce spasm-related discomfort, but it does not cure tendon, joint, nerve, or bone causes. Treating the underlying problem may require examination, physiotherapy, or another treatment.

Can I drive after taking a muscle relaxant?

Many muscle relaxants can cause sleepiness, dizziness, or slower reactions. Avoid driving until you know your response and a clinician or pharmacist confirms it is appropriate.

What if shoulder pain follows an injury?

Arrange prompt assessment when pain is severe, movement is markedly restricted, or there is deformity, numbness, weakness, or colour change in the arm or hand. A Rotator Cuff Tear is one injury-related condition clinicians may assess.
