What should you know about mumps stages?

Early illness can feel like a general viral infection, with reduced appetite, headache, muscle aches or fever. Swelling of the parotid glands may then appear below the ears and make the face look fuller. It can affect one or both sides and may make chewing or swallowing uncomfortable. As the illness settles, swelling and tenderness should gradually ease, although tiredness can linger. Not everyone follows the same pattern, and other infections can look similar.

Record when symptoms began and whether swelling is changing. Rest, drink enough to keep your urine pale, and select foods that need little chewing. Use only pain or fever medicines suitable for you, following advice from a pharmacist or clinician. Avoid close contact and shared utensils while infection is possible. Seek medical advice for suspected mumps, worsening swelling, persistent fever or difficulty eating and drinking.
