What should you know about mumps without fever?

A normal temperature does not rule out mumps. Some people have mild or changing symptoms, and a reading can vary with the time of day, recent medicines and how it was taken. Mumps often involves tender swelling near the jaw or ears, with tiredness, headache or discomfort when chewing. Similar symptoms may occur with a common cold, COVID-19 or another condition, so no fever cannot identify the cause.

Record the swelling, pain, temperature readings and any contact with a suspected case. Seek a GP consultation if symptoms persist, worsen or follow an exposure, and phone before attending in person. Until advised otherwise, avoid close contact and sharing cups or utensils. Rest, drink regularly and choose gentle foods if chewing hurts. Do not start antibiotics unless prescribed for a diagnosed bacterial problem.

Get prompt advice for increasing gland swelling, severe headache, repeated vomiting, dehydration, confusion, testicular pain or abdominal pain. Emergency care is needed for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, a seizure, fainting or rapid deterioration. These warning signs matter even when the thermometer is normal.

Ask whether the pattern fits mumps or another infection, whether testing is useful, how long to limit contact with others, and whether close contacts need vaccination advice.
