What should you know about mumps MMR vaccine?

MMR vaccination trains the immune system to recognise measles, mumps and rubella. Protection may be incomplete if doses are missed, given at an unusual time, or immunity is uncertain. A person who has been vaccinated can still need assessment after close contact with someone who may have mumps. Mumps commonly causes tender swelling near the jaw or ears, but symptoms can vary; fever and swollen glands may occur.

Check your vaccination record and arrange a GP consultation if you are unsure whether you received the recommended MMR doses. If you develop jaw swelling, fever or feel unwell after exposure, phone ahead before attending a clinic. Avoid close contact, sharing cups or cutlery, and group activities until a clinician advises you. Rest, drink fluids and use only medicines suitable for you, following the label or a clinician’s instructions.

Contact a clinician promptly for new swelling around the jaw, trouble eating, persistent fever, severe headache, vomiting, testicular pain or abdominal pain. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, confusion, a seizure or rapidly worsening illness. These features do not confirm mumps, but they need timely assessment.
