Mumps inflammation: affected glands and care

Short answer
Mumps inflammation usually affects salivary glands near the jaw, causing swelling and tenderness alongside a viral illness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Salivary glands around the cheek and jaw.

- Fluids, rest, comfort measures and infection precautions.
How the swelling develops
Inflammation is the body's response to infection. In mumps, the glands that make saliva can become enlarged and sore, sometimes on one side and sometimes on both. Chewing, swallowing or sour foods may increase discomfort. Fever, headache and fatigue can accompany the gland swelling.
Inflammation can occur in other illnesses too, so the appearance of a swollen gland cannot confirm mumps. A clinician may consider symptoms, recent contact, vaccination history and a suitable test.
Easing discomfort safely
Rest, drink regularly and choose soft foods. Avoid anything that clearly worsens gland pain. Do not squeeze or massage the swelling. Use pain or fever medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow package directions or clinical advice. Phone before attending a clinic because mumps can spread through close contact.
Keep personal items separate and follow advice about staying away from others. A [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) can help distinguish mumps from another cause. Background is available at [Mumps](/conditions/mumps/).
Warning signs of a serious problem
Get urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if you develop confusion, collapse, a seizure, severe headache with neck stiffness, or dehydration. Seek prompt assessment for worsening pain, hearing changes, severe vomiting, or new severe pain in the abdomen or testicles. See [Fever](/symptoms/fever/) and [Swollen Glands](/symptoms/swollen-glands/) for related symptom information.
Questions to bring
Which gland appears inflamed? Do I need testing? What foods or medicines may ease the pain? How long should I limit contact with others? What change would mean I need urgent review?

Questions people ask
Does inflammation prove that I have mumps?
No. Other infections and conditions can inflame glands, so a clinician may need to assess you.
Should I massage a swollen gland?
Avoid squeezing or massaging it; ask a clinician how to manage persistent or painful swelling.
