What should you know about mumps in older males?

Mumps is a viral infection that commonly causes tender swelling near the jaw or cheeks, tiredness, headache and fever. Swollen glands can make chewing or swallowing uncomfortable. In males who have gone through puberty, inflammation may affect one or both testicles, causing pain, swelling or a heavy feeling in the scrotum. This symptom needs prompt clinical advice; do not examine the area repeatedly or delay care.

A diagnosis may be based on symptoms and an examination, with testing arranged when the clinician needs to distinguish mumps from other infections. Avoid close contact while unwell because the virus can spread through respiratory droplets and saliva.

Arrange a GP consultation before attending a waiting room if mumps is possible, so the practice can advise about infection control. Rest, drink regularly and choose soft foods if jaw swelling makes eating difficult. Use only medicines suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician’s instructions. Do not share cups, utensils or towels, and wash your hands often.
