What should you know about mumps in the mouth?

Mumps usually produces swelling outside the mouth, beside the cheeks or beneath the jaw, rather than a simple mouth ulcer. The area may hurt when chewing or swallowing, and fever, headache, or tiredness may accompany it. A dry mouth can make eating uncomfortable. A tooth abscess, gum infection, blocked salivary duct, or allergy can also cause mouth or facial swelling, so the location and pattern matter.

Arrange a GP Consultation if swelling, fever, or jaw pain suggests mumps, and call ahead before attending. Sip fluids, choose soft foods, and avoid sharing cups or utensils. Keep up gentle mouth care, but do not press a swollen area or try to drain it. A dentist may be the right professional when pain is centred on one tooth, the gum, or a visible dental abscess.

Seek emergency help for swelling that interferes with breathing or swallowing, drooling with inability to swallow, rapidly spreading facial swelling, confusion, or fainting. Prompt assessment is needed for severe tooth or jaw pain, pus, persistent vomiting, dehydration, or worsening fever. Sudden swelling after food or medicine exposure may be an allergic emergency.

Ask whether the swelling is in a salivary gland, tooth, gum, or lymph node; whether testing is needed; which foods and pain relief are suitable; and whether your MMR Vaccination history should be checked.
