Short answer

Mumps is a contagious viral infection that may cause swollen glands near the jaw, fever, and difficulty chewing or swallowing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main symptom
Tender swelling near the cheeks or jaw
Spread
Close contact with respiratory secretions or saliva

What mumps involves

Mumps commonly affects salivary glands, creating tenderness or fullness beside the cheeks or under the jaw. Headache, tiredness, reduced appetite, and fever may occur. Swollen glands are a common presentation of mumps, but swelling can also have other causes, so a clinician must assess the whole pattern. The virus can spread through respiratory droplets and saliva, especially during close contact.

Steps at home

Contact a GP Consultation if mumps is possible, and mention symptoms before arriving. Rest, drink regularly, and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or towels, and limit close contact while you are unwell. Check vaccination history with a clinician; MMR Vaccination helps prevent mumps but does not replace assessment of current symptoms.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe headache with a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, or repeated vomiting. Prompt assessment is also needed for testicular or abdominal pain, hearing changes, or swelling that is rapidly worsening. Fever that persists or an inability to drink warrants medical advice, particularly for children, pregnancy, or significant long-term illness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit mumps, whether testing is useful, how to protect household contacts, when normal activities can resume, and whether your vaccination record needs review.
