Mumps fever symptoms explained

Mumps is a viral illness that can inflame the salivary glands. A person may first feel generally unwell, lose appetite, or develop a headache and fever; swelling and tenderness around the ear or jaw may follow. Some people have mild or incomplete symptoms. Fever symptoms alone cannot establish mumps, because several infections can cause a similar combination.

Note the order of symptoms, contact with anyone diagnosed with mumps, vaccination history, and whether drinking and urination remain normal. This information helps a clinician judge the need for examination, testing, isolation advice, or another explanation.

Encourage regular sips of water or oral fluids and allow rest. Soft foods can reduce discomfort if jaw movement hurts. Avoid sharing drinks, cutlery, or towels, and reduce close contact with others while infection is being considered. Follow label directions for any age-appropriate fever or pain medicine, and seek pharmacist advice if the person is a child, pregnant, dehydrated, or taking regular treatment.

Seek same-day advice for fever with new gland swelling, worsening pain, poor fluid intake, or symptoms that are not settling. Emergency help is needed for breathing or swallowing difficulty, severe dehydration, confusion, a seizure, stiff neck, severe headache, or marked drowsiness.
