Mumps and sore throat: what should you know?

Mumps affects salivary glands around the cheeks and jaw. Swelling and dry mouth can make the throat feel sore, and fever or headache may accompany it. A sore throat alone does not identify mumps. Common cold, influenza and COVID-19 can cause throat discomfort, while tonsillitis or strep throat may cause painful swallowing. Glandular fever can bring pronounced tiredness and swollen glands.

Acid reflux and allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat without causing a contagious infection. Note whether the pain is one-sided, whether you can drink, and whether jaw swelling or a rash has appeared. This information helps a clinician separate possible causes.

Sip water or warm fluids, choose soft foods and avoid smoke. Do not share cups, cutlery or toothbrushes if a contagious illness is possible. Call a clinic before attending when sore throat is accompanied by jaw swelling or fever. Do not use leftover antibiotics; treatment depends on the cause, and some throat illnesses are viral.

Arrange prompt assessment for worsening throat pain, fever with jaw swelling, a spreading rash, severe tiredness or known contact with mumps. Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva or fluids, have noisy or difficult breathing, severe one-sided swelling, confusion, neck stiffness or signs of dehydration.
