Multiple myeloma treatment: what to know

Treatment aims to control abnormal plasma cells, protect organs, ease symptoms, and maintain daily function. A plan may use chemotherapy, targeted medicines, immune-based approaches, or cellular therapy. Some people are assessed for an autologous stem-cell transplant. Radiotherapy can help with a specific painful or vulnerable bone area. Bone-strengthening therapy, infection prevention, pain control, and kidney-supportive measures may sit alongside the cancer treatment.

Ask how each medicine is given, which side effects need a same-day call, and how treatment could affect work, travel, dental care, and vaccines. Keep an up-to-date medicine list and tell the team about kidney problems, numbness, infections, or planned procedures. Blood tests and other reviews help the team adjust treatment safely and assess whether it is controlling the myeloma.

Call the treatment team urgently for fever, shaking chills, breathlessness, chest pain, severe diarrhoea or vomiting, unusual bleeding, new confusion, very little urine, or sudden severe back pain. New weakness, numbness, or difficulty walking also needs prompt assessment.

Ask what the first treatment phase is intended to achieve, how response will be checked, whether transplant or cellular therapy is suitable, and how bone and kidney health will be protected. Ask for a written plan for side effects and urgent contacts.
