What should you know about multiple itchy bumps on skin?

The location, timing, and surface of the bumps provide useful clues. Dry, cracked, rough areas may fit asteatotic eczema; recurring itchy patches can occur with atopic dermatitis. A new product, metal, adhesive, or fabric may trigger contact dermatitis. Raised areas that come and go can be hives. Night-time itch with similar symptoms in household contacts raises the possibility of scabies, while moist skin folds can be affected by a skin yeast infection.

These patterns overlap, so appearance alone cannot confirm a diagnosis. Note when the itch began, where it started, what touches the skin, and whether anyone else at home is affected.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser, keep showers lukewarm, and avoid scratching, harsh scrubs, and newly introduced products. Trim nails and use a cool compress for short periods. Do not apply steroid or antifungal creams to an uncertain rash for a long time without advice, because they can alter the appearance or irritate some infections. A clinician can match treatment to the cause.

Seek urgent help if itchy bumps come with swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, or widespread painful redness. Arrange a medical review when the rash persists, spreads, disrupts sleep, develops pus or crusting, or follows close contact with someone who may have scabies.
