What should you know about MS and Crohn's disease?

MS affects the brain and spinal cord and may cause neurological symptoms such as altered sensation, weakness, vision changes, or problems with balance. Crohn's disease affects the digestive tract and can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, tiredness, and reduced appetite. Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel condition; it is not a form of MS.

Some people may have more than one immune-related condition, but symptoms such as fatigue can also result from poor sleep, anaemia, medicines, inflammation, or the condition itself. Abdominal pain and diarrhoea deserve assessment rather than being assumed to be part of MS.

Record bowel frequency, stool changes, pain location, weight changes, fever, and any neurological symptoms. A GP Consultation can review the pattern, medicines, family history, and examination findings. A Blood Test may help look for anaemia or inflammation, but further bowel assessment may be needed if Crohn's disease is suspected.

Continue prescribed MS treatment unless your specialist tells you otherwise. Do not start restrictive diets or stop medicines because of new digestive symptoms without clinical advice.

Contact a clinician promptly for ongoing diarrhoea, blood or black stool, persistent abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, dehydration, or unexplained weight loss. Seek urgent help for severe pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, confusion, or new neurological symptoms that develop suddenly.
