What should you know about MRI and a septate uterus?

A septate uterus develops when a band of tissue divides the inside of the uterus to some degree. The outside contour and the internal cavity both matter when interpreting images, because different uterine shapes can look similar on an initial scan. Some people have no symptoms. Others may encounter the finding during assessment for period concerns, fertility, pregnancy loss, or pregnancy complications. An MRI report should be interpreted alongside your history and examination.

Take the report to the clinician who arranged the MRI and ask what anatomy was seen and whether the result is definite. You may be offered specialist review or another examination to complete the assessment. Treatment is not automatically needed. If the septum is linked with reproductive concerns, a gynaecologist can explain whether removing it could help in your circumstances, including the possible benefits and risks of operative hysteroscopy.

Seek urgent care for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting, fever, or pregnancy-related pain or bleeding. These symptoms need assessment whether or not a uterine septum has been found. Contact your maternity team promptly during pregnancy if you notice fluid leakage, regular painful tightenings, or reduced fetal movement according to your local advice.

Ask how much of the cavity is divided, whether the outer uterine shape is normal, what symptoms the finding could explain, whether treatment is recommended, and what follow-up is appropriate before pregnancy or fertility treatment.
