What should you know about MRI for prostate cancer?

The scan can help show the size and position of a suspicious area, whether the prostate has features that need closer assessment and how nearby structures appear. It does not by itself prove that an area is cancer; a clinician combines the images with examination, PSA results and, when needed, tissue sampling.

MRI findings may help a team decide whether a biopsy is appropriate and where to target it. If prostate cancer is confirmed, the images can contribute to discussions about observation, surgery, radiotherapy or other approaches.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about food, drink and bladder or bowel preparation. Tell staff about metal implants, kidney disease, previous contrast reactions and anxiety in enclosed spaces. Wear clothing without metal and remain as still as possible while images are collected.

Take your usual medicines unless your treating team gives different instructions. Ask how and when the report will be shared, because the scan operator may not be the person who explains the result.

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower abdominal pain or become increasingly unwell. After contrast, urgent attention is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or widespread hives. New leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control also needs immediate assessment.

Ask what the MRI is intended to clarify, whether contrast or a biopsy may follow, and how the result could affect your options. If treatment is being discussed, ask how imaging relates to radiotherapy, brachytherapy or prostate removal surgery.
