What should you know about MR rubella vaccine?

MR means measles and rubella. The vaccine is preventive: it is intended to reduce the chance of illness and transmission, rather than treat an infection that is already developing.

After vaccination, the immune system builds a memory of the vaccine components. If it later encounters measles or rubella, that immune response can act more quickly. Protection is not immediate, so follow the schedule advised by your local health service.

Some people have temporary soreness, redness or swelling where the injection was given. A mild fever or feeling generally unwell can also occur. These reactions usually settle without specific treatment; tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, allergies, pregnancy, or medicines that affect immunity.

After the injection, keep the area clean and notice how you feel. Rest and drink fluids if you develop a mild fever. Do not receive a further dose without checking the recommended interval and your vaccination history with a healthcare professional.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a rapidly spreading rash after vaccination. These may signal a serious allergic reaction.

Contact a clinician promptly if a fever is severe or persistent, you feel increasingly unwell, or symptoms do not settle as expected. If you have possible symptoms of rubella, including fever, joint pain or swollen glands, arrange a GP consultation and avoid close contact with pregnant people until you receive advice.
