What should you know about mouth cancer inside lip?

The inner lip contains delicate lining tissue that can be injured by biting, braces, dentures, or a sharp tooth. Infection and blocked minor salivary glands can also cause swelling. A cancerous change may look like a sore that does not heal, a firm lump, a thickened patch, or an area that bleeds or feels numb. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

During an assessment, a dentist or doctor checks the lip, nearby mouth tissues, jaw, and neck. A biopsy may be needed for a persistent or unusual area. The result guides whether further imaging or specialist care is appropriate.

Arrange a review if an inner-lip change persists, enlarges, hardens, repeatedly bleeds, or returns in the same place. Note when it began and whether biting, eating, or a dental appliance affects it. Avoid smoking and other tobacco products, and ask for help stopping if this is difficult.

When cancer is diagnosed, treatment depends on the lesion and any spread beyond the lip. Options may include tumour removal surgery or radiotherapy. If nearby neck lymph nodes are a concern, neck dissection may be discussed. Your team should cover wound care, eating, speech, dental needs, and follow-up.

Seek prompt medical or dental assessment for a non-healing inner-lip sore, a firm swelling, unexplained bleeding, numbness, or a lesion that affects eating. Seek urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if bleeding will not stop with gentle pressure.

Ask whether dental irritation could explain the finding, whether a biopsy is appropriate, and how to care for the area while waiting. If cancer is confirmed, ask about the treatment goal, possible changes to lip movement or appearance, neck assessment, and available rehabilitation.
