Mouth cancer caused by smoking

Tobacco smoke exposes the lips, tongue, gums, inner cheeks and other mouth tissues to chemicals that can injure cells. Repeated injury may contribute to cellular changes over time. Smoking is one risk factor among several, and a mouth symptom can have many non-cancer causes. Mouth cancer presents with signs such as a sore that does not heal, a persistent red or white patch, a lump, unexplained bleeding, numbness or difficulty chewing and swallowing.

A clinician examines the mouth and neck and may arrange a biopsy of an abnormal area. Imaging can show how far a confirmed cancer extends. The treatment plan depends on the tumour site, size, tissue findings and whether nearby lymph nodes are involved.

Arrange an oral examination for any persistent change, especially if it is worsening or affecting eating, speech or swallowing. Tell the clinician about smoking and any other tobacco exposure without embarrassment; this helps them assess risk and plan support. If cancer is confirmed, treatment may include tumour removal surgery, radiotherapy, or surgery involving neck lymph nodes. Stopping smoking can support healing and is worth discussing at every stage.

Book prompt medical or dental review for a mouth sore, patch, lump, bleeding area, persistent pain, loose tooth without a clear cause, voice change, or difficulty swallowing that does not settle. Seek urgent help if swelling causes breathing difficulty, swallowing becomes unsafe, or bleeding is heavy or ongoing. These symptoms require assessment regardless of whether you smoke.
