Motion sickness and pregnancy: what should you know?

How the structures involved in Motion Sickness differ from normal

Short answer

During pregnancy, motion sickness can add to nausea, so prevention and medicine choices should be planned with a clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the symptoms overlap

Pregnancy-related nausea and motion sickness can both cause queasiness, dizziness, and vomiting. Travel movement may intensify symptoms that are already present, while a sudden change from your usual pattern may have another explanation.

The inner ear detects movement and the eyes provide visual information. When those messages disagree, the brain can produce nausea and other symptoms. This process is separate from the pregnancy itself, but dehydration from repeated vomiting can affect your wellbeing.

Planning a journey

Tell your maternity clinician or pharmacist that you are pregnant before using tablets, patches, or other remedies for travel sickness. They can consider your stage of pregnancy, health conditions, and other medicines. Do not borrow someone else’s prescription.

Choose a seat with a clear view outside, keep cool air moving, and avoid reading during travel. Have plain snacks available, eat small amounts regularly, and take frequent sips of fluid. Rest as soon as symptoms start rather than waiting for vomiting.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, have very dark urine or pass little urine, feel faint, or are losing weight. Seek urgent care for blood in vomit, severe abdominal pain, fever, confusion, or a severe headache with visual changes.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which travel measures and medicines are appropriate for you, how to recognise dehydration, and whether your itinerary needs adjustment if nausea is severe.

Questions people ask

Can I take my usual motion-sickness medicine?

Not without checking first; pregnancy can change which medicines are appropriate and how their effects should be monitored.

When is vomiting more than motion sickness?

Persistent vomiting, dehydration, pain, fever, or a marked change from your usual pregnancy symptoms needs medical assessment.
