What time of day do the waters most commonly break?

The waters may release as a sudden gush or as a slow, ongoing trickle that is difficult to control. The fluid is usually watery, but normal vaginal discharge or urine can feel similar. Note the time, colour, smell, and amount, and use a maternity pad rather than a tampon so the fluid can be assessed. Contractions may start before or after the membranes rupture.

Call your maternity unit or pregnancy care team for advice, even if contractions have not started. They may ask about your pregnancy stage, the fluid, the baby’s movements, and symptoms such as bleeding or pain. Avoid intercourse and placing anything in the vagina until you have received advice. If the fluid is green or brown, or the baby is moving less, mention this immediately.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for fluid loss before full term, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, feeling unwell, reduced fetal movement, or a visible cord. Fluid loss before full term can be linked with preterm labour and needs prompt review.

Ask how to confirm whether the membranes have ruptured, when you should attend the unit, how long to monitor contractions, and what warning signs should prompt immediate return.
