What should you know about the most common site of ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is inflammation of the inner lining of the large bowel. When the rectum is involved, urgency, frequent bowel movements, mucus, and bleeding may occur. If inflammation reaches farther through the colon, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, tiredness, and reduced appetite can become more prominent. The affected area and inflammation level can change over time, so symptoms alone cannot map the full extent of disease.

Arrange a GP Consultation for persistent diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, repeated urgency, or unexplained abdominal pain. A clinician may review your history, examine you, and arrange stool or blood tests; a bowel examination may be needed to see inflammation directly. Keep a record of bowel frequency, bleeding, pain, fever, weight change, and medicines. Do not start or stop prescribed treatment without advice. Colorectal Cancer Screening is a separate process from investigating active symptoms.

Seek urgent care for heavy or ongoing rectal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, high fever, fainting, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Rapidly worsening diarrhoea with dizziness or very little urine can indicate dehydration. Emergency help is needed if you become unusually drowsy, collapse, or feel severely unwell.
