The areas near the knee include the lower end of the thigh bone and the upper end of the shin bone. Osteosarcoma can also begin near the shoulder or in other bones. The location may cause persistent bone pain, swelling, or reduced movement, but these symptoms can have several causes and do not by themselves identify cancer. Imaging helps show the bone and nearby tissues; a biopsy is used when a specialist needs to examine tissue directly.

Arrange an assessment if pain or swelling persists, returns, or interferes with activity. A clinician may examine the area and arrange imaging before referral to a bone-tumour team. Treatment planning is individual. It may combine chemotherapy with tumour removal surgery, with the order depending on the tumour and overall assessment. Ask how the team will protect nearby nerves, blood vessels, joints, and limb function.

Seek prompt medical care for a new lump, worsening pain at rest or overnight, or difficulty using an arm or leg. Seek urgent help after a sudden severe injury or inability to bear weight, because a weakened bone may need immediate support. These signs do not confirm osteosarcoma; they indicate that assessment should not be delayed.
