The trigger is usually not the hair itself. Allergic proteins can settle on furniture, clothing and bedding, so symptoms may continue after the dog has left. Some people notice symptoms after touching a dog, while others react mainly in enclosed spaces. Coughing, chest tightness or wheezing can signal airway involvement and should be discussed with a clinician, especially if asthma is present.

Limit close contact during a flare, wash hands after touching a dog, keep the animal out of the bedroom and clean fabrics and surfaces regularly. Avoid brushing or bathing the dog yourself if this reliably triggers symptoms. A GP consultation can help distinguish allergy from infection or another cause. Allergy testing may clarify which exposure is responsible and guide a practical plan.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, faintness, confusion or rapidly spreading symptoms. These may indicate anaphylaxis, which needs immediate treatment. Arrange prompt medical review for repeated wheezing, nighttime breathing symptoms or symptoms that interfere with sleep and daily activities.
