What should you know about most common cause of erythema nodosum?

The condition produces tender red or purple nodules, commonly over the fronts of the shins. The lumps can feel bruised and may change colour as they settle, without forming an open ulcer. A recent throat or other infection, a new medicine, or an inflammatory illness can be associated with the reaction, but sometimes no trigger is found. The nodules are not the same as a bacterial skin infection. A clinician may examine your skin and ask about recent illness, medicines, joint symptoms, bowel symptoms, or breathing complaints.

Rest the affected legs, elevate them when comfortable, and use cool compresses if these soothe the tenderness. Avoid starting or stopping prescription medicine without clinical advice. Arrange an assessment if painful nodules appear, especially with fever, joint pain, cough, diarrhoea, or a recent medicine change. Seek prompt care if nodules are rapidly increasing, pain prevents walking, or you have significant fever or feel very unwell. Ask what triggers are plausible from your history, whether tests are needed for infection or inflammation, and which pain-relief measures suit you. If corticosteroids are discussed, ask why they are appropriate and how possible underlying infection has been considered.
