Short answer

The most common cause of erysipelas is bacterial entry through a break in the skin, often involving streptococcal bacteria.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
Bacteria entering through broken skin
Appearance
Often a hot, raised, clearly bordered red area

How erysipelas starts

A crack, ulcer, insect bite, scratch, or wound can allow bacteria past the skin barrier. Athlete's foot may create small fissures between the toes that provide an entry route. Erysipelas affects the upper layers of skin and nearby lymphatic vessels, so the border may look raised and sharply defined. The area can become bright red, hot, swollen, and tender, and illness may develop quickly. Similar-looking rashes have other causes, so an examination is needed to confirm the diagnosis.

What to do now

Do not puncture, squeeze, or cover the area with irritating products. Keep any wound clean and protected, and arrange prompt medical assessment when redness is spreading or pain and swelling are increasing. Confirmed erysipelas is treated with prescription antibiotics chosen by a clinician; use them as directed and complete the prescribed course. Mention previous episodes, medication allergies, and any foot fissures during the visit.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical attention for rapidly expanding redness, severe pain, high fever, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or marked weakness. Facial involvement, especially near the eye, needs prompt assessment. Emergency help is appropriate if you feel seriously unwell or develop breathing difficulty. Early review helps distinguish erysipelas from deeper infection and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where the infection may have entered, whether a wound or Athlete's foot needs treatment, which antibiotic is appropriate for you, and what improvement should look like. Ask how to reduce the chance of another episode if you have repeated infections.

Questions people ask

Is erysipelas the same as cellulitis?

They are related bacterial skin infections, but erysipelas usually affects more superficial skin and often has a more distinct raised border.

Can Athlete's foot contribute to erysipelas?

Yes. Cracked skin between the toes can provide an entry route for bacteria and should be assessed if recurrent infection occurs.
