What is the most accurate food intolerance test?

Short answer
The most accurate food intolerance assessment combines your symptoms, medical history, a food diary and a supervised elimination and reintroduction plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful first step
- A detailed food and symptom diary
- Avoid
- Removing several food groups without guidance
What the result means
Food intolerance is usually a digestive response rather than an immediate immune emergency. Symptoms can include bloating, abdominal discomfort, wind or diarrhoea after a particular food. A positive home panel does not by itself prove that a food causes your symptoms, because some tests detect exposure or immune markers without showing a clinically meaningful intolerance.
A clinician may consider lactose intolerance testing, coeliac disease testing or another targeted investigation when your pattern suggests it. Read more about [Food Intolerance](/conditions/food-intolerance/), [Bloating](/symptoms/bloating/) and [Diarrhoea](/symptoms/diarrhoea/).
How assessment usually works
Record meals, portions, timing and symptoms for several days. Take the diary to a GP or dietitian before removing major food groups. If an elimination trial is appropriate, the food is removed for a defined period and then reintroduced in a planned way, while nutrition is protected. Targeted [Food Intolerance Testing](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/food-intolerance-testing/) may be advised, and [Nutrition Counselling](/treatments/lifestyle-and-wellness/nutrition-counselling/) can help prevent unnecessary restrictions.
When to seek medical care
Arrange medical assessment for ongoing diarrhoea, weight loss, blood in the stool, repeated vomiting, fever, dehydration or symptoms that wake you from sleep. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness or a rapidly spreading rash after eating, as these may indicate an allergic reaction rather than intolerance.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which diagnosis fits your symptom pattern, whether you need testing before changing your diet, how long an elimination trial should last, and how to reintroduce foods safely. Ask whether a dietitian should review your plan.

Questions people ask
Are home food intolerance kits reliable?
Their findings may not show whether a food actually triggers your symptoms. Discuss any result with a clinician before changing your diet.
Is food intolerance the same as food allergy?
No. Allergy can cause a rapid immune reaction, while intolerance more often causes digestive symptoms and may depend on the amount eaten.
