What should you know about mosquito rash?

Mosquito saliva can trigger local inflammation, producing small bumps, redness, warmth, and itch. Some people develop a larger local reaction, especially after repeated exposure. A rash that keeps spreading, becomes scaly, forms a ring, appears in skin folds, or affects other household members may have another explanation. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, intertrigo, and a drug rash can resemble a bite reaction. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Wash the skin gently, use a cool compress, and keep fingernails short to reduce damage from scratching. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing, and avoiding further bites helps the reaction settle. Do not share towels or apply someone else's prescription cream. Arrange a medical review if the rash persists, repeatedly returns without clear exposure, or changes character. A clinician can match the distribution and timing with possible triggers.

Get urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread blistering. Seek prompt assessment when the rash is painful rather than itchy, rapidly spreading, draining fluid, or accompanied by fever or marked illness. These features can signal infection or a significant allergic or medication reaction rather than an uncomplicated bite.

Ask which features support a bite reaction, whether the pattern suggests a condition such as scabies or ringworm, and which products are safe for your skin. Mention new medicines, travel, pets, household symptoms, and the timing of outdoor exposure.
