What should you know about mosquito chikungunya symptoms?

Symptoms often begin after an interval following the bite and may be intense, especially around several joints. Swelling, stiffness, headache, nausea, and a skin rash can also occur. Joint pain may last longer than the initial fever and can interfere with walking, sleep, or ordinary tasks. Chikungunya can resemble dengue, malaria, or other viral illnesses, so symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis. Recent travel or residence in an affected area helps a clinician judge the next step.

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and keep a record of fever, pain, rash, travel, and mosquito exposure. Use a suitable fever or pain medicine only as directed by a clinician or the product instructions, especially if dengue is possible. Avoid further mosquito bites while unwell by using repellent, covering skin, and using screens or nets. Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are significant, persistent, or follow relevant travel.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, bleeding, severe abdominal pain, inability to drink, or reduced urine. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with major long-term conditions may need earlier assessment. Tell the clinician about travel dates and any medicines taken, because mosquito-borne illnesses can overlap and some treatments are unsuitable until other causes are excluded.
