The material is prepared with water and shaped over protective padding. As it sets, it forms a firm shell that limits movement and helps keep a fracture or corrected position supported. A cast may cover part of a limb or extend around it, depending on swelling, the injury, and the treatment plan.

A fresh cast can feel warm while it hardens. Swelling may change the fit during the early period, so the cast should not be trimmed, loosened, or altered at home. Plaster is also different from a removable support because it is shaped for continuous protection.

Keep the cast dry unless your clinical team gives different instructions, and protect it during bathing. Elevate the limb when swelling is present, move the uncovered fingers or toes gently, and keep follow-up appointments so the fit and healing can be checked. Never push objects inside the cast to scratch the skin.

Use only the medicines and walking aids recommended for your injury. A cast that becomes loose, cracked, soft, wet, or unusually tight needs advice from the treating team.

Get urgent help for blue, pale, or cold fingers or toes, severe pressure, new inability to move them, or numbness that does not settle after elevation. Contact the cast team promptly for increasing pain, burning, foul odour, drainage, fever, or a cast that has broken or lost its support.

Ask how long the cast is expected to stay, whether you may walk or use the limb, how to protect it from moisture, which swelling changes are expected, and where to go if the cast becomes tight or damaged.
