What should you know about mommy makeover compression garments?

A mommy makeover may combine procedures such as abdominal surgery, breast surgery, or liposuction. Healing tissues can swell, feel tender, and produce fluid. A garment applies gentle, even pressure over the area it covers and can make movement feel more supported while swelling settles. It does not close an incision or replace wound care.

The correct garment depends on the operations performed, incision placement, drains, skin condition, and the surgeon’s preferences. It should feel supportive rather than sharply painful, numb, cold, or restrictive. A garment that rolls, digs into an incision, or leaves marked colour change needs review.

Use the garment for the hours recommended by the surgical team and follow instructions about when it may be removed for washing or bathing. Keep incisions clean and dry as instructed. Check the skin each time it is removed, wash the garment according to its care label, and do not alter seams or add extra tight layers. A physiotherapist may advise lymphoedema therapy when swelling needs additional support.

Contact the surgical team urgently for sudden one-sided swelling, increasing redness or warmth, pus, wound separation, heavy bleeding, worsening pain, fever, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Remove or loosen the garment only as your discharge instructions advise if it causes numbness, blue or pale skin, severe pressure, or trouble breathing, then seek clinical guidance.
