Moles Under the Eyes: When to Get Advice

A stable mole near the eye may be benign, but location can make self-checking difficult. Pay attention to new asymmetry, an irregular outline, mixed colour, growth, crusting, bleeding, or a persistent change in itch or tenderness. A spot that disturbs eyelashes, alters the eyelid edge, or causes recurrent irritation deserves specialist attention. These features signal the need for examination; they cannot identify the diagnosis on their own.

Use a mirror and good lighting, or ask someone you trust to help compare the spot over time. Avoid rubbing it and do not use acids, freezing products, or other home treatments close to the eye. Arrange a skin examination; depending on the exact position, an eye specialist may also be involved. If removal is considered, ask how the procedure will protect the eyelid and eye surface and whether tissue will be examined.

Seek prompt medical advice for a changing, bleeding, ulcerated, or persistently painful mole near the eye. Contact an eye professional urgently if there is new vision change, marked swelling, difficulty closing the eyelid, or significant eye pain. Do not delay assessment because the spot is small; changes around the eyelid can be hard to judge without close examination.

Ask which specialist should examine the mole, whether dermoscopy is suitable, and whether the eyelashes or eyelid margin are involved. If treatment is advised, ask about scarring, eye protection, wound care, and the plan for reviewing the tissue.
