What should you know about moles that look cancerous?

How the structures involved in Moles differ from normal

Short answer

A mole that looks cancerous should be checked by a dermatologist, because visual clues raise concern but cannot confirm skin cancer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Visual clues
Asymmetry, uneven border, colour variation, or evolution
Best confirmation

Why appearance can be misleading

Moles vary naturally in colour, size, texture, and outline. A very dark, raised, uneven, or unusual-looking mark may be harmless, while a less dramatic change can still need attention. The pattern over time and comparison with your other moles help guide assessment.

Clinicians look for asymmetry, irregular borders, varied colour, growth, bleeding, crusting, or a sore that does not heal. These are clinical clues, not a diagnosis. Magnified examination and, when appropriate, laboratory testing provide more reliable answers.

Preparing for assessment

Take a close photograph and a wider photograph showing the body location. Note when the mark changed, whether it bleeds or itches, and any recent injury. Do not cover it with makeup before the appointment if that would hide its surface.

A dermatologist can discuss monitoring, sampling, or removal. Depending on the finding, [Surgical Excision](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/excisional-surgery/) or [Mole Removal](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/mole-removal/) may be discussed, with attention to diagnosis and the resulting scar.

When to seek medical help

Arrange prompt review when a mole changes quickly, bleeds without a clear cause, repeatedly crusts, becomes tender, or develops a non-healing area. Urgent care is appropriate for bleeding that does not settle with direct pressure or signs of infection after an injury.

Questions for the consultation

Ask which visual feature needs checking, whether a photograph is enough for monitoring, whether tissue examination is recommended, and how to protect and observe the area after treatment.

Questions people ask

Can a mole look cancerous without being cancer?

Yes. Benign moles can look unusual, so an examination is needed before drawing conclusions.

What if the mole has always looked unusual?

Tell the dermatologist about its history; long-term stability is useful context, but the lesion should still be assessed if it changes.
