Moles near the anus: what to know

Skin near the anus can be exposed to moisture, rubbing, wiping, and minor injury. Those factors may cause irritation, tenderness, or bleeding and can make a mole harder to judge. Other conditions, including skin tags, haemorrhoids, or irritated skin, can look like a mole to an untrained eye. Location alone does not identify the lesion. A clinician can examine the surrounding skin and distinguish a pigment mark from another growth.

Do not scratch, cut, tie off, or apply household removal products to the area. Clean gently, pat dry, and reduce friction where possible. Use a mirror or ask a trusted person to help you notice changes, but avoid repeated rubbing while checking. Arrange a private dermatology examination if the mark is new, difficult to see, repeatedly irritated, or changing. Seek prompt assessment for a mole that changes in colour, border, size, or surface, or one that repeatedly bleeds, crusts, becomes persistently sore, or causes ongoing itch. Get urgent help for heavy or continuing bleeding, severe pain, fever, or spreading redness and discharge. These warning signs call for examination; they do not establish what the lesion is.
