Moles and pregnancy: what to know

How the structures involved in Moles differ from normal

Short answer

Pregnancy can make some moles appear darker or more noticeable, but a new or changing mole should be assessed by a dermatologist.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What changes can happen

Hormonal and pigment changes during pregnancy may alter the colour of existing moles, especially on areas that receive friction or sun exposure. The abdomen may stretch as pregnancy progresses, which can make a mole seem different in size or shape. These changes can be harmless, but pregnancy should not be used to explain away every change. A mole that becomes very uneven, develops several colours, bleeds, crusts, or remains itchy needs clinical attention.

Practical steps during pregnancy

Take a clear photograph beside a familiar object and note where the mole is, what it looked like before pregnancy, and when you noticed a difference. Use sun protection and avoid picking or rubbing the area. Arrange a skin examination if the change is persistent, marked, or difficult to judge in a mirror. Tell the clinician that you are pregnant so examination and any next step can be planned appropriately. Do not apply home removal products.

When to seek care promptly

Contact a dermatologist promptly for a mole that changes quickly, has an irregular outline, shows contrasting shades, repeatedly bleeds, forms a persistent scab, or becomes persistently sore. Seek urgent care for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure. A pregnancy-related colour shift may be benign, but urgency is guided by the warning features and the examination, not by pregnancy alone.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the mole needs dermoscopic examination, whether a photograph is useful for monitoring, and whether any procedure should wait until after delivery. If removal is advised, ask how the tissue will be examined and how wound care fits with your pregnancy.

Questions people ask

Should every mole change during pregnancy be removed?

No. A clinician decides whether monitoring or removal is appropriate after examining the mole and considering the nature of the change.

Can a dermatologist examine a mole during pregnancy?

Yes. Tell the dermatologist you are pregnant so the assessment and any recommended next step can be tailored to you.
