What Should You Know About Molds Plaster of Paris?

Plaster of Paris is mixed with water and layered around padding or a protective liner. It hardens into a mold that can support a body part, limit unwanted movement and preserve alignment. A clinician chooses the shape and fit for the specific injury or treatment goal. The material is used in fracture care and in staged casting for some foot and leg conditions, including clubfoot.

A new cast may feel warm while it sets. Swelling can change the fit afterward, so comfort, finger or toe movement, skin colour and sensation matter during follow-up.

Keep the cast dry unless the treating team gives different instructions. Do not trim, crack, insert objects under it or rest it on a hard edge. Elevate the limb when advised, move the uncovered fingers or toes gently, and attend scheduled checks. Protect the cast during washing with the method recommended by the clinic.

Never place powders, oils or heat inside the cast. If it becomes soft, broken, wet, loose or painfully tight, contact the casting team for advice rather than trying to reshape it at home.

Get prompt medical help for increasing pain or pressure, persistent numbness or tingling, pale or blue fingers or toes, inability to move them, severe swelling, a foul smell, drainage or a new fever. Sudden shortness of breath or chest pain is an emergency and is unrelated to routine cast care.

Ask what the mold is intended to support, how to protect it from water, which movements are allowed, how swelling will be checked, and when it should be reviewed or changed. Ask where to call if the cast becomes tight or damaged.
