Molar pregnancy ultrasound

During ultrasound, the clinician assesses the uterus, pregnancy sac, embryo if visible, and placental tissue. A complete mole may appear as a diffuse abnormal pattern without a normally developing embryo; a partial mole may have some developing pregnancy structures alongside abnormal placental change. Early scans can be difficult to interpret.

Ultrasound findings are not interpreted in isolation. The care team considers bleeding, nausea, uterine size, and human chorionic gonadotropin levels. These findings can suggest a molar pregnancy, while other conditions can produce an unusual scan appearance.

Ask for a clear explanation of the scan and whether the images need review by a specialist. Your team may arrange blood tests, repeat ultrasound, or examination under specialist care. Keep a record of bleeding, pain, vomiting, and fluid intake so changes are easy to describe.

Call emergency services or attend an emergency department for heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, severe pain, shortness of breath, or inability to keep fluids down.
