Molar pregnancy ultrasound at 8 weeks

At around 8 weeks, an ultrasound may show a pregnancy sac, an embryo, or a pattern of abnormal cystic placental tissue. The appearance varies with the type and extent of molar pregnancy and with how early the scan is performed. Dates can also be uncertain, so an unexpected scan does not automatically establish a diagnosis.

The sonographer or doctor combines the images with symptoms and human chorionic gonadotropin results. A repeat scan or specialist review may be recommended when the first images are unclear. Bleeding or nausea can occur with a molar pregnancy, but neither symptom proves that diagnosis.

Ask when the report will be reviewed and whether you need repeat imaging, blood testing, or referral to a specialist pregnancy team. Bring the date of your last menstrual period, earlier scan reports, and a list of medicines. Follow instructions about hydration and return promptly for scheduled testing.
