What should you know about modelling plaster of Paris?

Plaster of Paris is a fine powder that forms a workable paste when mixed with water. As it sets, it becomes firm enough to hold a shape. In orthopaedics, trained staff can apply plaster bandages around padding to support an injured limb or guide a developing foot position. The material is moulded while soft, so its fit and the position of the limb matter.

A plaster support is not the same as a diagnosis. The clinician must check circulation, sensation, swelling, and movement before and after application. Plaster can also become too tight if swelling increases.

Keep the cast clean and dry unless your care team gives different instructions. Do not insert objects underneath it to scratch, trim its edges, or alter its shape. Elevate the limb when advised, move free fingers or toes gently, and follow instructions about weight-bearing. Report rubbing, soft spots, cracks, or a cast that has become loose or tight. Contact the treating service promptly for increasing pain, numbness, pins and needles, unusual coldness, pale or blue fingers or toes, worsening swelling, a foul smell, drainage, fever, or skin burning beneath the cast. Seek urgent help if the limb suddenly becomes weak or severely painful, or if the cast was damaged after a new injury.

Ask how long the support is expected to stay on, whether you may walk or use the limb, how to protect it from moisture, and which changes require a cast check. Confirm how follow-up will assess healing and whether a replacement is needed as swelling changes.
