What should you know about a mobile TENS unit?

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. A small battery-powered device sends controlled pulses through adhesive electrodes placed on intact skin near, or sometimes around, a painful area. The sensation may feel like tingling or gentle tapping. It is intended to change how pain signals are processed; it does not repair a fracture, ligament, or joint problem.

A mobile design can be worn while moving around, but the device should remain secured and the wires should not pull on the pads. Relief varies by the cause and location of pain, and some people notice little benefit.

Follow the device instructions and the plan provided by a clinician. Place pads only on clean, dry, unbroken skin, keep them away from the front or side of the neck and across the chest, and remove them before bathing or swimming. Start at a comfortable setting rather than turning the intensity up quickly. Stop if the skin becomes irritated, the sensation is painful, or symptoms worsen.
