What should you know about a mobile otoscope?

The device combines a light with a small camera so an ear canal image can be viewed on a phone or shared with a clinician. It may help show wax, irritation, fluid, or a visible change near the eardrum. A clear image does not rule out every ear problem, and a poor angle, movement, narrow canal, or wax can limit what is visible.

The device is an observation tool, not a replacement for hearing assessment, examination, or treatment. Children may need a calmer, age-appropriate approach because movement can make the image difficult to interpret.

Only use a clean device as instructed, and never push the tip into the canal or use it to remove wax. Stop if there is pain, bleeding, dizziness, or distress. Share the image with a qualified clinician and describe when symptoms began, whether one or both ears are affected, and any discharge, fever, hearing change, or recent injury.

A GP Consultation can provide an in-person assessment when the image is unclear or symptoms persist. For a child with ear concerns, a Child Health Consultation may be more suitable.

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, blood or pus from the ear, a foreign object, marked dizziness, facial weakness, or symptoms after a significant head or ear injury. Fever with a very unwell child also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for a home image when these warning signs are present.

Ask: Is the image clear enough to assess? Could wax or swelling hide the eardrum? Do I need a hearing test or direct examination? Should anything be kept out of the ear, and what changes mean I should return urgently?
