What should you know about MMRV fever?

MMRV protects against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox. A raised temperature may appear as the immune system responds. Some children also become tired, irritable, or develop a mild rash. Fever can also come from an infection that happened to begin at the same time, so the timing alone does not identify its cause.

Check the temperature with a reliable thermometer and observe drinking, urination, alertness and breathing. A rash with breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or unusual drowsiness is not something to watch at home.

Offer frequent fluids and dress the child in light layers. Let them rest, but check them regularly. Use fever medicine only when appropriate for the child and according to the product instructions or a clinician's advice; never give aspirin to a child unless specifically directed. Do not use cold baths or alcohol rubs.

Keep a note of the temperature, the time vaccination was given, medicines used, and any rash or other symptoms. This gives the clinician a clearer picture if advice is needed.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, a seizure, collapse, a rapidly spreading purple or blistering rash, or a child who is difficult to wake. Contact a clinician promptly if the child is not drinking, is passing very little urine, appears increasingly unwell, or the fever persists or returns after improving.

Ask whether the temperature and timing fit a vaccine response, which fever medicine and dose are suitable, how long home monitoring is reasonable, and whether the child needs assessment for another infection.
