Can the MMR vaccine cause fever?

Vaccination gives the immune system information about measles, mumps, and rubella. As that response develops, some people feel warm, tired, or unsettled. The fever can be delayed, which can make the connection less obvious. Fever is not proof that the vaccine has caused an infection, and it does not establish how well an individual is protected. A cough, runny nose, stomach upset, or exposure to someone unwell may point toward an unrelated illness such as a common cold or another infection.

Encourage fluids, rest, and light clothing. Check alertness, breathing, drinking, and urination as well as temperature. Keep a brief record of the reading, time, and accompanying symptoms. Avoid cold-water baths and excessive blankets. If the person is uncomfortable, ask a pharmacist or clinician about an age- and weight-appropriate medicine and follow its instructions. Do not combine products containing the same ingredient. Most importantly, continue watching how the person is doing rather than chasing a single number.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or throat, collapse, a seizure, severe drowsiness, or a child who cannot be roused normally. Seek prompt clinical advice if fever is worsening or not settling, fluids are poorly tolerated, urination drops, or a rash is accompanied by marked illness. Contact a clinician if symptoms suggest an infection such as acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or COVID-19, particularly after a relevant exposure.

Ask whether the timing fits a vaccine reaction, which symptoms need urgent review, what medicine is suitable, and how to document the event before a later dose. Mention any immune condition or regular treatment.
