What should you know about MMR shot fever?

A mild raised temperature may appear after vaccination, sometimes alongside tiredness, reduced appetite, or soreness where the injection was given. The response can be delayed rather than starting immediately. Fever after a shot does not by itself show that the vaccine caused an infection. A separate illness, such as a common cold, can also begin around the same time, especially if cough, runny nose, vomiting, or diarrhoea develops.

Offer frequent drinks and let the child rest in light, comfortable clothing. Check how they look and behave, not only the thermometer reading. Continue breastfeeds or usual fluids where appropriate. Do not use ice baths or bundle the child in heavy blankets. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which fever medicine, if any, is suitable for the child’s age, weight, and health history, and follow the product directions. Keep a note of when the fever began and any other symptoms.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, a seizure, unusual difficulty waking, or a child who looks seriously unwell. Contact a clinician promptly if the fever is not settling, the child is drinking very little, passes much less urine, develops a spreading rash with illness, or you are worried because of a long-term condition. A clinician can assess whether the timing and accompanying symptoms fit a vaccine reaction or another cause.

Ask whether the temperature and timing are within the expected range, which symptoms should trigger same-day advice, and whether any regular medicine or medical condition changes the care plan. Ask how to record the reaction before a future dose.
