MMR rash after vaccine: what to know

The immune system may produce scattered pink or red spots after vaccination, sometimes alongside tiredness or a mild fever. The rash’s timing can be useful, but it does not prove the cause. Irritation, heat, a new product, a medicine, or an infection can produce similar changes. Look at the pattern rather than one feature: note whether spots are flat or raised, itchy or painful, localised or widespread, and whether the person is otherwise alert and drinking normally. A clinician can decide whether examination is needed.

Keep the skin cool, use gentle fragrance-free products, and choose loose clothing. Encourage fluids and rest. Avoid scratching, picking, or trying several new creams at once. Ask before using medicine for fever or itching.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, fainting, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek prompt advice for a high [Fever](/symptoms/fever/), marked drowsiness, purple spots, painful blistering, skin peeling, or reduced fluid intake. Do not delay care because the rash began after a vaccine.
