MMR and fever: what to know

A temperature can reflect the immune response after vaccination, but it can also accompany an infection. The timing after MMR, how high or persistent the temperature is, and symptoms such as cough, breathing difficulty, diarrhoea, rash, pain, or unusual sleepiness help a clinician judge what is happening. Fever by itself does not identify one particular condition.

Possible illnesses include a common cold, COVID-19, chickenpox, croup, acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, cellulitis, or brucellosis. These conditions have different patterns and treatments, so avoid diagnosing yourself from temperature alone.

Measure the temperature with a reliable thermometer and write down when it began, recent vaccines, and other symptoms. Encourage fluids and allow rest. Dress lightly and follow the product instructions for any fever medicine only if it is suitable for the person's age and health. Do not give medicines containing aspirin to children unless a healthcare professional specifically advises it. Keep watch for a change in breathing, alertness, hydration, or skin appearance.

Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, a seizure, severe confusion, collapse, a stiff neck, or a child who is difficult to wake. Get prompt medical advice for a very unwell appearance, dehydration, a rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, or fever that is persistent or worsening. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immunity may need earlier assessment.

Ask whether the timing fits a vaccine reaction, which examination or tests may be needed, what temperature changes matter, and which fever medicines are safe for the person affected.
