What should you know about missed miscarriage after 12 week scan?

A missed miscarriage can be discovered during a scheduled scan even when you have no bleeding, cramps or change in pregnancy symptoms. The scan assesses development and may identify that the pregnancy is no longer progressing. Your clinician will explain whether the finding is clear or whether another assessment is needed.

The diagnosis is not caused by something you did. After confirmation, the uterus may pass the tissue naturally, or you may choose medical treatment or a procedure. The right plan considers your symptoms, examination, medical history, personal preferences and access to support.

Ask for a clear explanation of the scan, what happens next and who to contact outside clinic hours. Discuss how long each option may take, expected bleeding and cramps, pain relief, time away from work and the follow-up needed to confirm completion.

Bring someone you trust if that feels helpful, and ask about emotional support. Use pads during bleeding so you can observe its amount. Keep medicines and instructions together, and do not begin treatment that was not prescribed for this pregnancy.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fainting, severe dizziness, fever, foul-smelling discharge or a sudden feeling of being seriously unwell. Contact your care team if bleeding or pain is more intense or prolonged than you were told to expect.

Ask whether the scan needs confirmation, which options are available at this stage, how tissue will be removed or passed, when follow-up will occur and which warning signs require emergency care. You can also ask when it is safe to return to usual activities.
