The device sits inside the uterus and releases hormone mainly at the uterine lining. This can make the lining thinner, so periods may become lighter, irregular or absent. Cramping and spotting can occur after insertion while the body adjusts. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Clinicians may consider it for contraception or troublesome heavy bleeding. Conditions such as adenomyosis, fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia or iron deficiency anaemia can affect the discussion, but the device is not appropriate for everyone.

Before insertion, tell the clinician about pregnancy possibility, unexplained bleeding, pelvic infection, uterine shape, medicines and previous problems with intrauterine devices. Attend the planned check and learn how to notice the threads if your clinician recommends this. Keep a record of bleeding and pain so changes are easier to discuss.

Get prompt medical advice for severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, very heavy bleeding, a positive pregnancy test, faintness, or concern that the device has moved or come out. Sudden pain with pregnancy symptoms needs urgent assessment because an intrauterine device does not rule out an ectopic pregnancy.
