Minor Burn on Finger: What to Know

Short answer
A minor burn on a finger should be cooled promptly, covered gently and watched for signs of deeper injury or infection.

What a finger burn can mean
A superficial burn may cause redness, tenderness and mild swelling. A small blister can form as the skin reacts to heat. Burns on fingers deserve careful attention because swelling can affect movement, and rings may become tight as the finger enlarges. Remove rings or other jewellery early if they are not stuck to the skin. Do not burst a blister; the intact skin offers some protection while new skin develops.
What to do at home
Hold the finger under cool running water for at least several minutes, then pat it dry. Do not use ice, butter, oil, toothpaste or harsh antiseptics. Cover the area with a clean, non-stick dressing and keep the hand raised when comfortable. Change the dressing if it becomes wet or dirty, washing your hands before and after care. Keep the finger moving gently if movement is comfortable, but avoid rubbing the burn or applying adhesive directly over damaged skin. See Minor Burn Treatment for additional care guidance.
When to seek medical care
Arrange prompt assessment if the burn looks white, brown, black, leathery or numb; wraps around the finger; crosses a joint; or limits movement. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, a burn caused by electricity or chemicals, or an injury involving the eye or airway. Contact a clinician if redness spreads, warmth and swelling increase, pus appears, fever develops or the wound is not improving. A clinician can also advise about tetanus protection and dressing choice.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the depth and position of the burn need an examination, which dressing suits the blister or open area, how often to change it, and what changes should prompt a return visit.

Questions people ask
Should I pop a burn blister on my finger?
No. Leave it intact unless a clinician advises otherwise, because opening it can expose the skin to irritation and infection.
Can I wear a ring after burning my finger?
Remove it early if it comes off easily. Swelling can make a ring difficult to remove later; never force jewellery through damaged skin.
